As I’ve read the novel. The first one that I can say is that the novel shows how rich people are very sophisticated and civilized. Like Carmen, she was the spoiled brat of Don Manuel. He gives everything she wants and spends her time for leisure. It shows the reality that people are selfish like Carmen. She had an abortion because she thought that she is too young to have a big responsibility.
The author shows that there are many gold diggers especially Filipino that are in the lower class. It focuses on how Antonio Samson lied and sinned to himself. How he faced the reality of being a pretender. How he was influenced by his root and what is his main reason for hiding the truth about his past. It also shows the reality in relationship of husband and wife (Betrayal).
It also show how dirty politics and big businesses are. They are greedy especially in power and money. In politics, they used their power for their own good even it is illegal. While businessman, used there money to buy or price a person for the sake of there business. It also shows that business man and politicians have their own sympathy with each other.
The novel shows that if you’re not true to yourself it will cause you a lot of burden inside you. When the problem patched up together inside you, it will cause you hard to find for a solution. But in the other side we need to be a pretender so for our own sake.
